SFDA Fines 10 Pharmacies SR1.7 Million for Drug Tracking violations

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has imposed fines totaling more than SR1.7 million on 10 pharmacies for violating rules related to the Electronic Drug Track and Trace System (RSD) for pharmaceutical products.

According to the SFDA, seven pharmacies failed to report their drug movements directly through the RSD system. Two pharmacies did not provide information about their registered products, regardless of price or usage. One pharmacy failed to report expected drug shortages or supply disruptions at least six months in advance, as required. The SFDA explained that the RSD system is designed to track and monitor human medicines from the manufacturing stage until they reach the final consumer. This system helps ensure drug safety and quality, prevents tampering and counterfeit medicines, and reduces drug shortages in the market.

The authority also stated that penalties under the RSD system apply to pharmaceutical establishments and warehouses. Fines can reach up to SR5 million. In addition, the SFDA may impose temporary closures of up to 180 days or cancel licenses of violating establishments.

The RSD system tracks drugs from production to use. Its key goals are to stop fake drugs, make sure that pharmaceuticals are always available, and make drugs safer overall. Read: Cold wave and sub-zero temperatures in several regions of Saudi Arabia

The SFDA launched the RSD system as part of its efforts to support Saudi Vision 2030. The system keeps track of all human pharmaceuticals made in Saudi Arabia and brought in from other nations by using advanced technology. This procedure makes the SFDA's job of protecting public health and making sure that all medicines are safe, real, and can be traced back to their source even stronger.
