Riyadh Metro Red Line to Extend 8.4 km with Five New Stations
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has awarded a contract to design, build, and complete the Red Line expansion of the Riyadh Metro. The new extension will add 8.4 kilometers to the existing Red Line.
The Red Line extension will run from King Saud University to the Diriyah Gate Development project. It will include five new metro stations. This project is part of RCRC’s plan to complete Riyadh’s public transport network and improve connections between important areas of the city, including residential neighborhoods, universities, cultural sites, and healthcare centers. The project continues Riyadh’s development journey during the era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz. It is supported and guided by Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the RCRC Board of Directors Mohammed bin Salman.
The Riyadh Public Transport Project, which King Salman formally opened in November 2024, is the foundation upon which the expansion rests. The Riyadh Metro is considered the backbone of the city’s public transport system.
Eng. Ibrahim Al-Sultan, Minister of State, Cabinet Member, and CEO of the RCRC, said the Red Line extension strengthens Riyadh’s public transport network and supports the commission’s goal of creating a sustainable urban transport system. This system connects key city centers with residential areas and major cultural and educational landmarks.
He stated that the project is a direct response to the high demand for public transportation that has existed since the metro opened to the public in late 2024. There is a lot of trust in the reliability and effectiveness of the Riyadh Metro, since it has carried over 173 million riders since it opened. The Red Line extension includes:
➤ 7.1 kilometers of deep underground tunnels
➤ 1.3 kilometers of elevated tracks
➤ Five new metro stations
Two of the new stations will be located at King Saud University. One station will serve the medical city and health colleges, while the other will serve the main university concourse. The remaining three stations will be in Diriyah, including one station planned as a future interchange with Metro Line 7.
The Red Line expansion project is expected to be completed in approximately six years. See Also: How to extend exit re-entry visa expired before one year
