Riyadh’s King Khalid Airport to Launch Biggest Upgrade in 40 Years
King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, operated by Riyadh Airports Company, is preparing for a major strategic transformation, the biggest update since the airport opened more than 40 years ago.
The new plan will begin in the first quarter of 2026 and is designed to match the rapid growth and development taking place in the Saudi capital.
This transformation is one of the airport’s most important development projects. It supports the long-term strategic vision for Riyadh’s airports by introducing wide operational improvements and organizational upgrades. Trending: Saudi Arabia to introduce new Tax in 2026
Terminal Reorganization
As part of the plan, the airport will carry out a large-scale operational reallocation between terminals. The redesign was completed while keeping the airport’s original architectural style.
Under the new setup:
➤ Terminal 5 will handle international flights for foreign airlines.
➤ Terminals 3 and 4 will be used for domestic flights.
➤ Terminals 1 and 2 will continue to serve international flights operated by national carriers. Most Viewed: 7 Travel rules all must follow while traveling abroad
Expected Improvements
This major restructuring is expected to:

🔘 Make passenger movement between terminals easier
🔘 Reduce waiting times
🔘 Improve overall passenger experience
🔘 Raise the quality of services provided to travelers
A final date for the activation of the new system will be announced once all airport partners and airlines confirm they are fully ready.
Riyadh Airports, working with the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Airports Holding Company, stated that this transformation is part of a larger strategy to enhance the passenger experience at the main airport of the Saudi capital. The initiative includes several development steps aimed at boosting operational efficiency and improving service standards for all travelers.
