Defaming someone Online on Social Media is a Cybercrime in Saudi Arabia: Public Prosecution
The Saudi Public Prosecution states that using technology to insult, defame, or hurt other people is a cybercrime in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that will be punished by law under the Anti-Cybercrime Law.
It said that this law safeguards people's rights and privacy and makes it illegal to use digital tools in ways that cause harm to other people or propagate harmful content. The purpose is to protect the online community from bad or unethical behavior. Most Viewed: Saudi Araiba implements Saudization on these 4 professions
According to Article 3 of the Anti-Cybercrime Law, anyone who violates another person’s privacy, damages their reputation, or misuses mobile phones or modern technology can face up to one year in prison, a fine of up to SR500,000, or both.
Lawyer Salman Al-Ramali said that this law is one of the strictest in protecting people’s reputations and digital privacy. He explained that punishment applies not only to direct defamation but also to any sharing or posting that causes harm or abuse to others.
Al-Ramali also said that the Public Prosecution uses this law to stop violations before they happen, which makes the internet a safer place. He emphasized that any online content—such as a tweet, post, repost, or offensive comment—that includes insults or defamation is considered a cybercrime. The law’s purpose is to protect privacy, maintain human dignity, and apply penalties to anyone who breaks these rules on social media or other digital platforms.
