Saudi Arabia Upgrades Road Code to Welcome Autonomous Vehicles

To make sure self-driving cars can work well in all kinds of weather, the authority said the new code specifies standards for road design and construction.
Building pavement layers that can deal with autonomous vehicles' repetitive routing patterns is one of these measures. Another is establishing real-time communication systems along roadways to relay important data to vehicles. Lastly, road markings and signs should be designed to be accurately read by machine vision systems.
Automated guidance and self-parking capabilities are two examples of the smart technologies being integrated into parking facilities with the goal of enhancing traffic flow and decreasing human error.

Aligning road infrastructure with environmental concerns and emerging transportation technology is the goal of this framework, which is used for planning, designing, operating, and maintaining roads.

Initially implemented as a framework for voluntary compliance, the Saudi Roads Code is now fully applicable to public sector entities, as of the start of this year, as part of the authority's regulatory mandate. Midway through the year 2025, the private sector formally started complying.
