Tuesday saw a joint statement from the UN High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, in which the co-chairs expressed sadness at having to stop the conference because of worsening conditions.
Concerned about the ongoing rise in violence in the region, the group highlighted the need to restore calm and protect international law immediately.
Additionally, they expressed their dedication to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict peacefully by establishing two separate states.
The statement, which was signed by Saudi Arabia and France—the conference co-chairs—and endorsed by the co-chairs of the working groups from Brazil, Egypt, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Norway, Qatar, Senegal, Spain, Türkiye, the UK, the EU, and the Arab League, underlined that the current events are a clear indication of how unstable the situation is in the region. The co-chairs have confirmed that roundtables will continue as planned when the suspension is lifted, with the goal of establishing clear and coordinated commitments that will unify efforts to realize the two-state solution.
They made note of the fact that the conference's high-level part will be reunited as soon as possible.
"We feel forced by the situation to increase our efforts in calling for the preservation of international law, the honoring of state sovereignty, and the advancement of peace, liberty, and dignity for all communities in the region," the statement stressed.
All parties involved are recommitted to ending the conflict in Gaza, finding a fair and permanent solution to the Palestinian question, and guaranteeing the stability and security of the whole area for the long term.
