Riyadh will soon see the start of the self-driving taxi project, according to Dr. Omaimah Bamasag, deputy of transport enablement at the Transport General Authority (TGA). Trending: Mandatory fitness testing for employees in Saudi Arabia
"This will represent a qualitative step towards a smart and sustainable future in the transportation sector," she said during a session titled "Smarter cities, smarter services: How artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are reshaping the future" at the University of Jeddah's UJ 2025 Artificial Intelligence Conference'.
Five cities in the kingdom have been designated as "self-driving friendly," according to Dr. Bamasag. These towns have both the physical and digital infrastructure needed to support autonomous vehicles, including trucks, cars, taxis, and drones.
She disclosed that the TGA has formed a Future Mobility Committee, which would be headed by the deputy minister of transportation and comprised of officials from important government departments. Most Viewed: Jawazat responds on Multiple exit visa questions
The committee creates a plan for mobility in the kingdom and organizes and manages initiatives, strategies, and projects. This committee is working on 120 projects, 16 of which involve using AI to enable smart mobility.
Dr. Bamasag noted that the kingdom is involved in a wide range of transportation initiatives. Two cities, Tabuk and Jeddah, have recently introduced electric bus public transportation, increasing the total number of cities in Saudi Arabia that provide this service to seventeen.
