Saudi Arabia approves Moderna Corona Vaccine for use in the Kingdom


Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) announced its approval to register the Moderna Corona Virus (Covid-19) vaccine, after the “Moderna” company submitted a request for approval to register it, so that the health authorities in the Kingdom could then import and use the vaccine.







The decision from SFDA to approve the registration and allow the use of the Moderna Corona vaccine was made based on the data provided by the company.

- Once the requirements were completed, the authority began reviewing and evaluating the registration files from several aspects, including evaluating the efficacy and safety data shown by pre-clinical trials and clinical studies, as well as verifying the quality of the vaccine by reviewing the scientific data that shows the quality of manufacturing and product stability, in addition to verifying the manufacturing stages and the factories commitment to applying the principles of good pharmaceutical manufacturing, as per the international standards in the pharmaceutical industry. - The Commission held several meetings to study the submitted data, including meetings with local and international experts and specialists, and a meeting with the company and its representative to answer the inquiries made by the Commission, and the opinion of the Scientific Advisory Team for Infectious Diseases proceeding from the Scientific Advisory Committee for Clinical Studies was taken.





- According to the Pharmaceutical and Herbal Facilities and Products Regulations, the Committee for the Registration of Pharmaceutical Companies and Factories and their Products held a meeting to study the scientific data and reports, and after presenting and discussing the subject in all its technical and scientific aspects, the Committee decided to approve the registration of the Moderna vaccine and allow its use.

- The Food and Drug authority explained that, based on the approval issued, the concerned health authorities will start import procedures in accordance with the relevant standards and requirements, and the authority will, in turn, analyze samples from each incoming shipment of the vaccine before using it to make sure its quality. - Earlier, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority has previously approved vaccines for the Corona virus, which are the British “AstraZeneca” vaccine, the “Pfizer-BioNTech” vaccine, and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
