Saudi Scientist Omar Yaghi Wins 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Saudi scientist Omar Yaghi, together with Susumu Kitagawa and Richard Robson, has won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for creating metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Wednesday.

Omar Yaghi, born in Jordan to Palestinian parents, became a Saudi citizen in 2021 after receiving royal approval under a program to naturalize leading experts in different fields. This program attempts to recruit international talent, boost investment, and foster a science- and innovation-based environment in Saudi Arabia. According to the Nobel Committee, the three scientists’ groundbreaking work on metal–organic frameworks—crystalline materials with extremely porous structures—has given chemists important tools to solve major global problems, such as clean energy storage and environmental sustainability.

The committee said, “Through the development of metal–organic frameworks, the laureates have provided chemists with new opportunities for solving some of the challenges we face.”

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry, first awarded in 1901, comes with a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million).

The 2025 chemistry prize is the third Nobel announcement of the year, following the medicine and physics prizes revealed earlier this week.

The chemistry prize went to David Baker, John Jumper, and Demis Hassabis in 2024 for their work on predicting and designing protein structures, which has changed how drugs are made today.

Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor, founded the Nobel Prizes to reward outstanding work in science, literature, and peace. Nobel, who invented dynamite and was himself a chemist, used his wealth to create these world-renowned awards over a century ago. Recommend: Saudi Arabia adopts wage clause in employment contracts
