New Saudi Food Law Violations Table: Rules for Restaurants, Delivery, and Menus
The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, in cooperation with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), has introduced an updated Table of Food Law Violations. The goal is to improve food safety, raise compliance among restaurants and food businesses, and protect public health.
Fair Penalties Based on Business Size
The updated law now considers the size of the food establishment and the type of business activity when applying penalties. This ensures fairness and helps small and medium-sized businesses obey the rules without discrimination. Trending: Saudi popular burger chain Hamburgini shuts down after food safety case
Gradual Implementation of Penalties
The new system uses a step-by-step approach:
➤ Minor violations: Businesses will first receive a warning and a period of time to correct mistakes.
➤ Serious violations: Direct penalties will be applied if consumer safety and public health are at risk.
New Areas Covered in Food Safety Rules
The law now includes more parts of the food supply chain, such as
✓ Delivery workers and their handling of food.
✓ Food tracking and monitoring systems.
✓ How food poisoning cases are reported and handled.
✓ Record keeping and documentation for full transparency. Most Viewed: Insurance company settles 250 million riyals in case of Dhahran Mall Fire
Healthy Lifestyle Requirements
To improve consumer awareness, new menu rules require restaurants to clearly display:
■ Salt content
■ Caffeine content
■ Physical activity equivalents (for example, how much exercise is needed to burn calories).
This helps consumers make healthier food choices and supports a healthy lifestyle.
Prevention Before Punishment
The Ministry and SFDA said the updated law focuses on prevention first, not just punishment. The aim is to create a culture where food safety is a responsibility for all businesses. Penalties are meant to protect society from negligence in public health.
Call for Compliance
Food establishments are urged to follow safety standards and meet all approved regulations to protect consumers and build trust. Recommend: How to get a Saudi work visa?
