Greenery in Makkah region increased to 600% in just 5 months


The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification in Saudi Arabia reports the area around Makkah acquired 600% more greenery in just 5 months from August to December 2023. Trending Video : Makkah Bus service



The comes due to rainfall that occurred during this time, with up to 200 mm of rain falling in some places, is responsible for this rise in greenery around Makkah region.

- According to an analysis of satellite imagery data, there was vegetation cover over 3,529.4 square kilometers in Makkah in August 2023. This was 2.3% of the whole Makkah region's size. With more rain over the next few months, this area slowly grew until it reached 26,256 square kilometers by the end of the year 2023.

- As of December 2023, plants covered 17.1% of the whole Makkah region. Most of it was in the mountains and hills that run along the coast of the Red Sea and are 500 to 2,600 meters high. - The national center studies the state of places with a lot of vegetation cover and keeps an eye on how things are changing at sites where trees are being planted. Using remote sensing and artificial intelligence, it also keeps track of changes in land cover, figures out how much rain falls, and checks on the health of plants. This helps groups that plant trees and the Saudi Green initiative reach their goals.
