Death toll from Typhoon Rai in the Philippines reaches near 100, over 480,000 were displaced


The Philippine National Disaster Agency announced that the death toll from the strongest Typhoon Rai has risen to 85, and more than 480,000 people have been fled from their homes and beachfront resorts as the Typhoon damaged the southern and central regions of archipelago. The Disaster agency said Rai, the most powerful typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, it flattened homes, damaged buildings flooded villages and disrupted power and communications lines in the central and southern provinces, while on Sunday officials step up their efforts to send food, water and other supplies to the affected areas.

- Bohol popular Tourist destination Governor Arthur Yap confirmed that at least 49 people were killed in the central province, and 10 others are still missing. He added, "It is very clear that our citizens have suffered greatly in terms of destroyed homes and agricultural losses," he said so far they have managed to reach only 21 out of 48 towns. - There were 10 deaths in Dynagat Island province and 5 people were still missing, according to Jeffrey Crisostomo, the county's media officer. "Our province has escaped, but the devastation is everywhere," he told DZBB radio station, adding, "About 90% to 95% of the district is completely damaged."





- The National Disaster Agency received reports of 16 deaths in the central province of Cebu and another 10 deaths from the neighboring provinces of Iloilo, Guimaraes, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental and Bukidnon. Charities and emergency services have appealed for donations.

- President Rodrigo Duterte flew to the region Saturday and promised 2 billion pesos in new aid. Aides said the president will visit Bohol on Sunday. Thousands of military, police, coast guard and fire personnel are being sent to assist in search and rescue efforts in the worst-effected areas of the vast archipelago. - A Philippine navy ship carrying goods and other relief items would depart for Bohol on Monday said Yap, as he earlier announced a state of crisis on the island.
